Three Pillars Support Our Coaching:

People-Centered - Performance-Based - Business-Focused

1. People-Centered
We are people helping people to be more effective. Our approach is based on the principles of adult learning theory - i.e. unproductive behavior usually comes from faulty learning or logic, or from reinforcement in a former system that no longer holds. The successful executive is an active learner, willing to experiment and be self-critical and self-praising in the process. The effective coach is both active and directive, functioning as a mirror, sounding board, teacher, model and guide.

2. Performance-Based
Executive coaching is a targeted process in which we focus on the executive's overt behavior, its causes, and its impact. Oftentimes, executives are unaware of the far-reaching impact their words and actions have on others. In coaching, we focus on what the executive is saying, hearing, doing and not doing in the work environment. Identifying triggers or factors that influence unproductive behavior and creating strategies to deal with them productively is part of our work. Intervention involves setting specific goals for development of new behaviors as well as the objective evaluation of outcomes. See "Assessments" below.

3. Business-Focused
People in business know how to set goals, implement plans, and achieve results. Coaching is a compatible process in which the executive and coach assess the situation, explore possibilities, set specific goals with behavioral anchors, and evaluate progress in business terms. The coach keeps the executive focused, provides real-time feedback and mid-course corrections, and celebrates achievement.

Assessments

Successful outcomes depend on clear, precise definition of the current situation. At Heads Up Coaching and Consulting, we always begin with a detailed analysis of the problem, challenge or situation at hand so we can recommend a course of action guaranteed to result in successful outcomes. While our process is consistent, our methods will vary depending on the situation.

Individual Assessment

Every coaching assignment is different, and gathering information about this executive in these circumstances working with these resources, opportunities and constraints is critical. We use commercially available 360-degree assessment instruments, company-specific assessments, or customized questionnaires to gain insight into the executive's self-perceptions and others' perceptions of him or her. This is the first step in helping executives understand the impact of their behavior on the business.

Situation Analysis

When work groups or teams are struggling, it is not always easy to know why. Yes, companies look to the leader first, but there is often much more going on that is hard for the people closest to the situation to see. The perspective of an outside expert in human and organizational behavior can be extremely useful in understanding the situation and choosing the right remedial steps.

Group Training Needs Analysis

New products, new services, new technology, new workflow processes - these are the obvious opportunities for a group training solution. But oftentimes, companies target shared performance deficiencies for a training solution when, in fact, it's not a training problem. Expertly applied training needs analysis can identify exactly what the problem is (or isn't) before time and money are wasted on the wrong solution.
